Robert Brackman
American, 1898-1980
Robert Brackman was not only a skilled painter, but a passionate teacher as well. He taught in leading schools and museums including the Art Students League in New York City where he was a favorite since the 1930's. Brackman was born on September 25, 1898 in Odessa, Russia. He immigrated to the United States at age ten. After a brief public school education he worked as a lithographer to support himself and finance his artistic education. He was taught by Robert Henri and George Bellows in New York and he also studied at the Ferrer School in San Francisco. It was not until the 1930's that Brackman began to receive the recognition he would enjoy for the rest of his life.
He was a member of the National Academy of Design, The Royal Society of Arts, London England, and the American Watercolor Society. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago, National Academy of Design, and the Salons of America. He won many medals and prizes. His works are found in major museums across the country, and is represented in a large number of corporate collections as an ideal example of modern American art. Brackman died in 1980.

Exhibition: La Belle Epoch
Reception: Thursday March 9 from 5-8 pm |
3/9/2006 to 3/29/2006 |
 |
|
The exhibition entitled “La Belle Epoch” will show a fine selection of paintings and unique works of la Belle Epoch. The greatest transformation of art and poetry from traditional to modern occurred during la Belle Epoch (1871-1914), other wise known as the “great age” of Paris. A modern world emerged during the Belle Epoch. This was a time in which writers and artists were intensely involved in exploring contemporary society, alive with new art and ideas. The best known group involved in exploring modern society was the Impressionists. The friendships existing between artists and poets can be credited with contributing a great deal to the modern art and literature that came from Paris during this era. The more progressive art and literature created by the Impressionists and Symbolists during the Belle Epoch mostly reflected society and its break from classical tradition. |
